Week 7: Night Landscapes by Amanda Friedman

For Exercise 2 "Light as a subject", I was more leaning towards capturing outdoor landscapes with natural lighting as compared to indoor portrait photography with studio lighting. The example below has a soft lighting in the photographs and it gives a sense of loneliness and calmness. I love the contrast between the shadows and the light.

Amanda Friedman is a talented photographer who studied at New York and currently based in Los Angeles, California. She shoots a lot of travel, celebrity and lifestyle photography. But when the sun goes down, she takes these long-exposure photos that capture the feeling of being stranded in the dead of night. Hauntingly beautiful and totally spooky.  There are many subtle qualities in both composition, tone and colour in this series of hers.

This series is by Amanda Friedman titled Night Landscape. I think it is very mesmerizing. It takes me away from our busy student life as these photographs reveal a simple, beautiful, and somewhat eerie solitude.  By honing in on form, color and contrast, Friedman captures peace, calm and beauty that we don't always take the time to notice.
